Over 200 educators and researchers from 14 countries converged at National Chengchi University for the 2nd International Conference on Affective Education. The two-day event, held both onsite and online, explored the theme “Emotions, motivation and wellbeing for learning in our global, interconnected societies,” addressing the growing importance of social-emotional learning and its impact on education in the 21st century.

“Affective education has become a critical piece of the global education puzzle,” said Dr. Chih-Yu Chan, a professor and vice president at National Chengchi University.“ As we strive towards the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), affective education is particularly aligned with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Fostering social-emotional learning, creating an equal, diverse, and inclusive campus, and empowering our youth are key to transforming education and rethinking learning experiences.”

The conference brought together a diverse group of scholars, practitioners, and researchers from across the globe, including Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and Iceland. Participants presented 44 papers, sparking discussions on a wide range of topics related to affective education, a field that focuses on the role of emotions, motivation, and well-being in learning.

The event addressed the growing recognition that emotions, attitudes, and values play a fundamental role in the learning process. Discussions centered on how these factors influence student motivation, engagement, and overall well-being. Presentations explored a wide range of topics, including:

  • The interplay between emotions and cognition in learning
  • The development of emotional intelligence in students
  • The importance of mindfulness and well-being in the classroom
  • The role of social-emotional learning in fostering positive social interaction and conflict resolution skills
  • Culturally diverse approaches to affective education

This conference provided a valuable platform for researchers and educators to share their experiences and best practices in implementing affective education strategies,” noted Dr. Mei-Shiu Chiu, a member of the conference organizing committee. “By fostering multidisciplinary dialogue on the latest trends and challenges in this field, we can work together to create a more holistic and effective learning environment for all students.”

The conference also highlighted the importance of diversity in both research and implementation of affective education programs. Participants explored a range of pedagogical approaches, including those incorporating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) across various school subjects and learning activities. The discussions encompassed formal school settings, informal learning environments, and parental and teacher education initiatives.

The 2nd International Conference on Affective Education serves as a testament to the growing global interest in this vital area. By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among educators worldwide, the conference paves the way for the development of innovative and effective strategies to empower learners, nurture their well-being, and prepare them for success in a complex and interconnected world. As education systems worldwide continue to evolve, the insights gained from this conference will play a crucial role in shaping more holistic, effective, and emotionally intelligent learning environments for students across the globe.
